A Day for Benjamin Franklin & Me

If you know me, you probably know that I like to make lists. My mind can run a million miles an hour and it seems to not run at full capacity if I am not constantly writing thoughts down. It used to be notecards, then it was the planner that Baylor gave us. Now, not only am I a huge fan of Things & Evernote and constantly have them loaded with what seems to be endless ideas and tasks, but I also often carry a Moleskin around and fill up 8.5” x 11” sheets of blank paper with chicken scratch like no one’s business. Exhibit A:

There are pros and cons to this method; I love having an outlet (and I honestly need to) but it can sometimes be hard to sort through and keep track of while still being an effective husband, businessman, songwriter, etcetera.

I came across Ben Franklin’s daily schedule (below) a few days ago and it struck me really funny.

After spending some time thinking about it, I thought about what my schedule looks like. I know what I want it to look like. Sometimes it happens. Sometimes it doesn’t.

How often do I examine the day? How many times does my day look this simple?

I am thankful to know and to work for & with several people that tend to evaluate themselves at the end of the day and ask this type of important question:

  • Did people see Jesus through me today?
  • Was I better today than I was yesterday? (And if not, how can I change that tomorrow?)
  • Was I encouraging to everyone I talked to today?
  • DId I spend enough time thinking?

I loved that this made me stop and contemplate. Hope it does the same for you.
